There is nothing ore terrifying than the lead up to graduation… the realisation that ‘shit, I need to get a real job now’. So when you manage to land yourself something that doesn’t involve getting something for a customer that has probably never known what manners are, there comes the feeling of relief… and then nerves, uncontrollable nerves.
But hey, you have to do it sometime right? And you’ll wonder what you was so worried about after a month or two. Having said that, here are a few thoughts everyone has in the first week or two:
1) ‘Sorry, was that English?’
There is always the tendency to question yourself when you start a new role, especially if you’re fresh out of university. But don’t worry, they wouldn’t have hired you if they didn’t think you could do the job. Just listen to everything, take notes and ask questions and it won’t be long until you are speaking the jargon.
2) ‘I swear I’m not 12’
Nothing worse than being the youngest person in the room, especially in an office. Just be mature and hopefully they will forget… when someone younger arrives.
3) ‘No, I don’t get it… but let’s give it a go’
No shame in asking them to go through it again, you’re still learning! In fact, it’s probably worse to just try and do it without really knowing what to do as it could cause big implications for the department or job at hand.
4) ‘Is this it?’
No graduate job is going to be the best job you will ever have, in fact you will have to do things you don’t want to do and won’t be given the chances to do more, that’s just life. .. I hope you didn’t think Uni was paying your dues… that was the fun part, your dues start now.
5) ‘How do these people stay so awake?’
They have had a LOT of coffee… and practice. You’ll get the hang of it, and learn to appreciate a Sunday lie in.
6) ‘Wait, this pay slip can’t be right’
Welcome to the tax system.
Hopefully it won’t be long until you know your way around the job and the office, and soon you will be wondering what you was so worried about. Make sure to pay attention and not to fall asleep at your desk!
